At Tesco we have no time for waste.
We believe it’s simply not right that surplus good food should go to waste when there are people in our communities who need it. That’s why we’re on a journey to ensure that no food that is suitable for human consumption will be wasted at Tesco.
Since 2014, we have made significant progress towards this :
-In 2014, we were the first retailer in Ireland to launch a national surplus food donations programme in partnership with FoodCloud.
-We are now working with over 270 charitable organisations all over Ireland such as family resource centres, soup kitchens, breakfast clubs, elderly care homes and more.
-Every week we donate an average of 40,000 meals from our stores
-To date through our programme we have donated over 4 million meals and counting
-This has helped these groups to save €5.8m in costs from their food bills and invest this back into providing more vital on the ground services in towns and cities all over the country
-We have more surplus food to give and are looking for support from colleagues and customers to find these groups –just tell us who they are and we’ll do the rest.
We are proud of the work we do to minimise food waste and to maximise donations when we have surplus to give.
As the next step on our journey we want each and every colleague to understand how our surplus food donation programme works and to understand that we have No Time For Waste.
We want every colleague to play a role in helping to recruit causes and spreading the word.
The video above gives you examples of the causes that benefit from our surplus food donations. Enjoy!
