Colleague Spotlight: Alan Dunne – GHS Driver, Bloomfields

Thursday 10th May, 2018

“I like driving and so when I heard about an open position in Tesco in Grocery Home Shopping, delivering customer’s groceries to their homes, it sounded like something that I would like; being out on the road and seeing different people all the time.

Every delivery is different as you get to meet all sorts of people in different locations.  I love the way you meet people from all walks of life and you get an insight into different people’s lives.  I always treat every single customer the same and I always try to go out of my way for customers.

I joined Tesco a year and a half ago and it was the first time I’ve ever had a permanent contract.  I know that might not mean a lot to some people but it means a lot to me. I’ve never been happier.   My whole life has changed.  I was always in and out of jobs before butknowing that I have the security in this job has made my home life more balanced and relaxed.  I’m not as stressed as I was before so it has made a big difference to my family.

We had a lot of training at the beginning.  It’s three weeks at the start and then we have top-up training every three months. I like the people here and look forward to coming in to work.  Everyone is friendly.  In other places I’ve worked you wouldn’t really get that.  I’m always walking around the place singing.  As soon as I came in the door I felt like I fitted in.

The benefits are good as there’s a Privilegecard with 10% off anything in-store.  The hours are good as I’m guaranteed 35 hours per week.  There’s a subsidised canteen and they always put on a good meal.

Outside of work I play football and I show English Bull Dogs; I love dogs and it’s something different.”
